Assignment 4- TV

How has the technology in TV and Film changed and what has been the impact of these changes for audiences and producers of film and TV?

TV
A shift from terrestrial TV to digital TV:
Over the years, technology has had an effect on how TV and film has changed majorly, an example of this would be the change between analog to digital TV. The shift between analog to digital has had an impact on how TV is viewed in present day, an example of this would be how digital TV has become more established by it provides a variety of channels as well as consist of high definition channels for a better quality viewing. With digital TV, another great change that has been made to analog TV is subscription boxes, a subscription box allows you to have access to over hundreds of channels with higher advanced channels. The change has become more popular as well as more high tech since analog TV.

As you know the shift between analog and digital has a big impact on the film and TV industry becoming more established as  more people around the world have access to any form of TV network and films. Analog TV was very limited with what shows it got to air on TV as there was only 5 channels you was very limited, with this you .have specific shows that could be aired on a certain channel so the program would be suitable for the audience range the channel was aiming at, an example of this is BBC One is a family viewing channel which means shows that are suitable for the whole family to watch would air on BBC One, some of these programs are competitions or gaming programs such as 'The Voice'. However now with digital TV most programs consist of there own  channels which has also become more popular by airing programs that is suitable for the audience of that specific channel.
Now with digital TV you have access into watching programs as well as channels that were not created in the UK, this would come with the subscription box such as 'Sky' and 'Virgin Media'. With subscription channels you have more of a variety including channels and programs that was created in a different country, a famous example of this is the channel 'MTV' is a channel which was made in the USA but now is viewed by people across the world., this channel consists of TV programs that varies with the age range from 12-34, for example 'Pretty Little Liars' is a television series which has a huge age range as well as a big fan base, as the US and the UK are there loyal viewers, it has become a well known series, with this they have also created a website for the series where you can communicate with other viewers of this series and share there views and opinions on certain shows etc. also you have access to see sneak peaks of upcoming episodes, character info, photos etc. this will encourage the viewers as they have more information about the series.
http://prettylittleliars.alloyentertainment.com/ Here is a link which would show you the official website for the series, on the website it gives you info on upcoming episodes and sneak peaks, interviews with each of the cast members as well as a place where you can communicate with other fans. This is a great way for a viewer of the show to express how passionate they are about the series or even if they had any opinions they would like to share, it allows them to speak there own mind and give an opinion of there own. One thing that can cause distress and disappointment for the fan base is if a series is coming to an end, and if something happens unexpectedly in which they did not want to happen, this can cause conflict with some of the fans.

With all the changes that have occurred with the TV and film industry, there are many advantages and disadvantages with it, this change has had a huge impact on on the way we watch TV and film for instance creating effects etc. A main change that has happened in the TV and film industry is the shift between analog and digital. With the digital revolution which began in the late 1950's to the 1970's, there has been various changes made. As we know analog to digital has had an effect on TV, it also has had an effect with the filming industry which is the change between analogue editing to digital editing. With analogue editing everything would be done manually, from cutting she of the clips and placing them in order or where ever you would want to place that clip, this was a very long process for filmmakers in the 1990's. However the process of editing has been simplified with digital editing over the past 20th century, this has become a huge benefit for editors as it has become an easier process to create a film within the date it has been set also editing a film together using new technology and software's is a less stressful job than doing it manually. With the benefits of working with digital editing, you can include various edits, transactions, special effects etc. when establishing the film together. By having this, you can make the film more fun and interesting for the viewers.

When creating a film, the main advantage of editing is the final edit of the whole film. This has played a huge part in the film industry as the final edit of the film is the most important. When the film is going through post production; editors make sure the shots fit well together and run smoothly within the shots, tweak any clips or effects that need improving, make sure any special effects fit well with the clip etc.
As everything is done using software's and technology, there are only a few people needed to edit the film, the work is done for you, for instance a well known software that is used is 'Premiere Pro CS6' which is a editing software that allows you to edit the clips you have to create the film. With this software you are given a range of tools to cut and create the clips the way you want them as well as include music, effects, transactions etc. It is a very efficient and easy software to use, also the more you use the software and get to know it, the easier it would be to edit the film. Being introduced to cheaper equipment has been an advancement for people in this day, cameras and equipment to film has been cheaper, this allows everyone to have access to this equipment, with this cameras have the ability to film in great quality which allows anyone to make a film. However before this advance technology was introduced to us, cameras where more expensive and editing was not computerized which meant everything had to be done manually, also means the process of creating the film would be longer. An example of technology in this day and age is the film 'Cloverfield' which was filmed by students using a hand held camera.

Technology and internet has become a large aspect of the TV and film industry over the century, now people have access to all types of technology such as mobile phones, computers, internet etc. With online internet you also have access to  websites which you have free entry to watch your films and programs on, an example of this is youtube; with this you have access to online clips made by everyone across the world, you can also watch some of your programs that you have missed as well as films that have been uploaded by other users. In addition to this youtube also create there own online web series which you can watch and keep up with, an example of this is 'awkward black girl' this is a series which is only viewed on youtube. By having small series on youtube it can encourage other young film makers to start creating there own mini web series as they know there would be a wide range of audience that would view it, this is also an efficient way in how young creative students can create and start a business. With web series on youtube you can also have access to; short films, videos made by youtubers etc. an example of a short film 'The Desk' which is a short 7 minute film made by student filmmakers, by having this it encourages young people to create videos and films that they might be interested in and share it with the public, this is what youtube has to other, as it allows anyone all ages to have access to clips and videos made by other filmmakers, also with youtube the public have access where they can communicate with the filmmaker by commenting on the video uploaded, this allows the filmmaker and the public to have a mutual ground which would be the film and share there views on how they felt about the film, as well as any opinions they would like to pass onto the filmmaker in order to improve or create upcoming films.
With the growth of internet and online web links, there are new websites in which you can get connected with more TV programs and films for instance 'Netflix' is quite a new web link, it is a legal website which allows you to view TV programs and films online by paying a monthly fee or even paying for the film you want to watch, by having Netflix it is minimizing the use of illegal viewing of films. This has been a successful creation as it is used by everyone across the world, people also enjoy this web link as they have access to what they would like to watch in the comfort of there own homes which is a huge benefit.

With the growth of technology using the internet watch TV programs and films has become a new platform on mobile phones, tablets etc. with this people are able to view the content they like on the go. This has become very efficient for viewers that might have a busy lifestyle and might not always have time to sit down and watch a program they enjoy or a film, by having on the go internet it allows them to have access to all sorts of web links, you can also download apps in order for you to view what ever you like, example of this is if you are a subscription user at home, you also have access to watching certain programs and films on your mobile device, such as being a sky broadband user you have access to the films and programs it has to offer by downloading there own sky app and importing your details of your sky box; being a owner of sky, they will allow you to have access to the programs and films of your choice when you are travelling or whenever you have free time and not at home. This is a great way to gain more of an audience as people would see how efficient it is and would want to invest in it.

Film
Ever since 1880's  there has been massive changes with the way films are created for instance; the quality of the film, editing skills that can be included, the way a film can be viewed such as 3D motion etc. With the change of technology, it has had a huge effect on how films are viewed for example you can now watch your film in high definition, this make the moving images look clear and in depth, you also have a sharp image of the film which would make you enjoy it more. With the whole new change of technology the past century, there has been a range of effects and techniques you can include in motion picture to make it look more interesting and eye catching, with this you can manipulate what you want to include in the film by creating different effects or even using new camera techniques to convey your idea to the audience for example green screens can be used to manipulate the audience by creating a background image that you might not be able to create.

Here is an image which shows you how green screen can be used. When filming with green screen you have to make sure there is the right amount of light hitting the character and the background this is so there are no imperfections when editing the green screen out.

With editing the software that is used has become very advanced and efficient, an example of this is films are edited quicker as there are certain types of software's and computers especially made for this, the computers and software's used can store and hold more of the footage and clips needed for the film. When editing the footage together in order to create the film, you can also use certain editing techniques   whilst the process of editing the film together, this can consist of different transitions, filters etc. example of the software is 'CS6 Premiere Pro ' which is a very efficient and easy software where you can edit the film. In addition to this you can also use and include special effects in order to create un-realistic effects for example aliens, UFO's, explosions etc. here is a great example of how special effects have been used.

Here is an image from the film 'World War Z', in this image you can see a pyramid of zombies made and are climbing over each other to get over the wall. When creating this scene on effects, they had to create the zombies as 'agents' which are visual bots programmed by visual effects, this allows the zombies to move in a certain pattern in order to create this.
This allows you to convey the adventurous idea you have for a film. An example of the software you can use for this is 'Adobe After Effects' this allows you to create special effects from scratch, as it is hard at first there are a range of sites where you can watch professionals on how you can use the software, a famous website that shows you clearly on how to use it is http://www.videocopilot.net/ , this provides tutorials on a range of ways in which you can create special effects.

As film has changed and progressed over the years it has given various opportunities for directors to create the ideas they came up with for a film, an example of a very new and exclusive type of technology is E-motion capture, this type of technology allows you to capture human movement and expressions by a computer.  It is a very new type of technology in which some directors are starting to use it in there movies, the main film that used e-motion capture is 'Avatar', by having access to this technology you can create different animals and species by using your own movement and actions when wearing a headset and a body suit which can capture each of your movements. By having this type of technology it allows you to create and discover new ideas in which you would like to create in a film.

Here is also a short clip on how they have achieved e motion in the film and how well is has worked for them.

Here are two images which shows how the e-motion works in the movie 'Avatar'. In the images you can see how the facial expressions and the body language of the actor/actress is mimicked by the avatar. In the images you can also see how each of the actors have to wear a head gear in order to get each of there movements and actions to be exact rather than be very jumpy or miss certain actions out. With this you can also see how fake ears and hair has been put on the head gear in order too get the image they want for there avatar. Lastly you can also see how each of the actors have dots on there faces, this is so they can capture every angle of the face with every expression and movement.

With the filming industry there are different type of ways in which you can watch the film for instance  2D and 3D films, with this you are also introduced with 4D motion. 3D motion is when a single image is made into a three image in a motion picture, by creating this there are layers of clips on top of each other to create the moving image come to life. Here in the image you can see how there are layers of the same shot to create a 3D image.

With this there has been some advantages and disadvantages an example of this is with 3D film, there have been various complaints made about how it creates pain to the eyes as well as causes headaches, this can be a huge downfall for the director of the film; as they know they have created a film in which they would want there audience to sit back and enjoy it, by having these complaints by the audience can cause it bad ratings in which it would end by not having people going and watching it. However people still believe it is a fun and different way in enjoying the film.
With 4D motion, there are a range of different changes made for this, an example of this is you would be able to smell and feel some of the actions going on in the film, this makes the film feel more realistic also feel like you are in the film. As this is a very new type of technology coming out, which means it is not introduced  everywhere yet. Here is an example of what 4D motion is, depending on the film the theater has been created for that specifically such as having movement in the film then your seat would start to move.
