Task four - Analyse the track

"Make It To Me" By Sam Smith

My mind runs away to you
With the thought I hope you'll see
Can't see where it's wandered to
But I know where it wants to be

I'm waiting patiently though time is moving slow
I have one vacancy and I wanted you to know that

You're the one designed for me
A distant stranger that I will complete
I know you're out there we're meant to be
So keep your head up and make it to me
And make it to me

So sick of this lonely air
It seems such a waste of breath
So much that I need to say
So much to get off my chest

I'm waiting patiently though time is moving slow
I have one vacancy and I wanted you to know that

You're the one designed for me
A distant stranger that I will complete
I know you're out there we're meant to be
So keep your head up and make it to me
Make it to me
Make it to me
Make it to me

The duration of the whole song is 2:41, as it is a short song I have to fit as many shots in the music video as I can but keep it very consistent and clear rather than cram all the shots in one video. Throughout the song the pace changes from a very slow pace to a slightly quicker pace in the chorus. then towards the end of the song it slows back down.
When i hear this song I think of a young couple being in avery happy relationship and enjoying young love in london.
The main content you get from this video is finding your love, this is shown in the chorus when it says 'you're the one designed for me'
When you hear the lyrics you can quickly imagine an image of two people happily in love which is what Sam Smith is trying to portray.
Throughout the song you don't find any narrative as there are not that many lyrics in the song.

Task Three - Analyse the artist

The song I will be using to create a music video is by Sam Smith, He is a well known artist for his different genres such as pop, r&b and soul. His music career is very fresh as he began around 2012. Sam Smith has also done a range of collaborations with other signed artists such as Disclosure and Naughty Boy. When Sam Smith is creating the music videos for his songs he makes sure that each of the songs fit well with the video. With most of Sam smiths music videos, he keeps them very simple and effortless, this makes the songs more effective and has more focus on the song rather than the video.
Majority of his own songs, Sam smith would have himself in the video even if it would be him sining, he would be in some shots within the video, He tends to use real life actions in his video which relates to the song.
His style is a very classy, in most of his videos he usually dresses in smart clothes and suites, by wearing smart clothing in his videos it makes them effective as it represents effort and class which he is representing in his songs.

This is an example from Sam Smith when he uses real life situations in his music video. in order to get the right feel for the video he plans how effective he wants his video to be. By having a song and a video which people who can relate to it can have more of an audience. With his music he also aims it at a range of audience which is good as he keeps his audience really broad for both sexes and ages.  The creative concept of this video is a married couple living a happy married life till the husband goes out and has an affair which his wife is aware but acts normal with the whole issue.

Here is another song by Sam Smith which also links with the song ' Money on my mind' he is in Las vegas.

Task Two - Choosing the track/ gaining permission

The song I have chosen to recreate a music video for is 'Make it to me' by Sam Smith. As Sam Smith is a signed artist it would be a very hard process in getting the permission I want in order to film, However as I am only filming for a school project and would not be viewing it anywhere else, I don't think it would be a problem. As I understand the copyright law very well I have made a decision and playing it safe by only viewing the music video to my teachers rather than posting it online.

Task One - Understanding copyright

Copyright is a legal right which protects the original work that someone has created, this law was created allowing a fair exception with the creator of the work and someone who would want access into using there work. You only have access to using copyright protected work only when you have permission by the copyright owner or by the law, this can be given in different forms some of which can be a document which have proof of you using work from someone else. Copyright doe not only protect the rights of music but also dramatic works, literary works, film, sound recordings etc. all these examples can consist of original work that are all copyright protected.

However there is also many ways for you to use music without being a form of copyright, now days there are a range of websites which allow you to have access to a song from an artist. This is a copyright licence which is a form of a contract between the people of the public and the person who has the full access to give the permission. The licence allows you to have access to a song from a artist of your choice, the website has permission from the artists of the song to have there song on this certain site, by providing them the access the site can then let the people of the public use the song but with a licence fee which they would need to pay for. This makes it easier for the people to use a song of there choice rather than going through a longer deal to contact the artist and asking them. This is a very legal and safe way to use music without going against any law.

With this website it allows you to have access to licensed music without going against the copyright law, it also shows you how you can apply for a licence in order to have access to using the songs.

When dealing with copyright music you also need to make sure you consider the infringing copyright. Some people do not always think of the infringing law when downloading or using copyrighted music as they think no one would find out, however failing to own a licence or have no permission can lead to you being liable for paying  for the damages and costs.

For my music video I will be using the song 'Love me like you' by Ella Eyre, as she is a well known artist, it would be very hard for me to get in touch with her or her team. As the music video is only for a class assignment and is not going to be published anywhere it is safe for me to use it. In my case if I was to ever create any sort of film and would want to include a featured song in it I would try many ways in getting in contact with the creators of the song to ask for there permission.
