2c - What legal issues and ethical considerations and relevant to C&P video?

Looking at a range of examples on the legal and ethical considerations on different corporate videos, there a range of effects, which need to be focused on before filming. Some of the considerations are privacy, disability, race, copyright etc.  Which need to be taken into consideration before any form of filming should be done. I have a clear understanding on the different considerations that need to be addressed in a corporate video.

Privacy - A law and state, which is being free from public attention.
When filming, making sure you have permission at all times to film in specific areas or people as they might not feel comfortable being filmed, as they are entitled to freedom and not wanting to be filmed we need to make sure we do not invade privacy when filming.

Libel - A defamation, which can be justified in writing, publishing or broadcasting. This can be a false statement that can damage reputations.
When filming making sure all the facts and information we gather about the sixth form, staff and students are true as publishing a video that consists of false statements and information can be a risk for us being the creators o the video as well as the sixth form.

Copyright - Is an intellectual property law, which originates from books, songs, ideas photographs etc. you cannot obtain ownership of pieces of work that you would want to use. In order to use other work you will need permission from the originator.
As we will be using music in our corporate video we will need to use royalty free music which are soundtracks created for people to use a non-copyrighted song.  If we were to use a copyrighted song we would have to gain permission from the originator of the song.

Discrimination - Making sure you don't discriminate anyone on grounds of age, sex, disability or ethnic origin in everyday life or in a workplace.
One thing I would have to make sure is we do not discriminate in the corporate video by not segregating anyone from the video as it can begging against the legal issues.

Race relations - The race relation act was created to outlaw the discrimination on the different grounds of race, ethnic or national origins.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_Relations_Act_1976
Making sure we do not go against the race relation’s act in our corporate video, we cannot say anything or do anything that can be in relation to race or ethic origins, which might harm others.

The broadcasting act was created in 1990 and was brought into the UK by the parliament. This was introduced to the UK  to create a legal framework as well as electric communication meaning, this was also to create a formal structure on TV and radio, making sure all regulations are followed.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadcasting_Act_1990
This act is very important to the TV and radio industry as there are some regulations that link to TV and radio and how it can make it easier for people to watch TV with the broadcasting act, without the regulations they would not have rules or regulations to follow win airing a programme, it is almost like a guideline for TV and radio.
For my music video I will be using my knowledge on what I know from the broadcasting act by making sure all my work and footage is my own, making sure nothing filmed or presented in illegal or inappropriate to use.

Here is an example of a promotional video which is a music video for the song ‘Only’ by the artist Nicki Minaj’. Looking at this music video you can see how some of the legal and ethical considerations have been broken, some of which is the artist using graphic images to show Nazism. The music video creates a huge controversial video to the viewers, as it is a reminder of the time of the Holocaust and Hitler with the Nazis. Nazism is shown in the video by having a symbol Nicki Minaj created on red flags with a white circle behind the symbol, which is the same colours and similar logo to the Nazi logo. The video uses obscenity of swearing in the lyrics, which are associated to pornography, which is what they are advertising in her music. The video is ethically and morally wrong because of the use of language and Nazism throughout the video. This can be very effective to some viewers as it can be disturbing to them as well as distressing. The video does not consist of anything within the discrimination, age, gender or race act however it does consist of obscenity of swearing. This goes against any obscene publications because of visuals and distressing scenes which can be upsetting for the audience.

Here is another promotional video, which is a music video by ‘Sia’ for her song ‘Elastic Heart’.  Looking at this music video, some people would suggest that it is a very controversial music video as there is an age difference between the actors. Having the male actor older than the actress it creates a controversial debate, as they are also very intimate throughout the video with the way they are dancing. Looking at the youtube comments on the video some people felt very uncomfortable with an older male  dancing inappropriately with a young girl.

Here is an anti-smoking advert which is shown on UK tv, the advert uses graphic images as well as shock tactics to create a very effective advert.  Using the graphic images in the advert they are trying to show how effective smoking is to your health and what it does to you.  Using this as a shock tactic will show the audience how serious smoking is and how it is effecting lives. Looking at some of the comments said about the advert, people have opinionated on how it has caused distressing and uneasy feel to the viewers whilst watching the advert. This has also caused a controversial debate on why the advert is very effective to watch however it should not be aired on TV because of how graphic it is.

Looking at promotional videos in music videos, here is another video which goes against the different rules and regulations for a music video. The video creates a huge controversy as the artist M.I.A has gone against the race and discrimination act. From the video you can see how the artist has used physical appearance as an act of discrimination, in the video the police go round gathering young people with ginger hair then taking them outside to a wasteland which they are attacked by weapons and explosives. Looking back at the comments you can see how it has caused distress for some viewers as the video does come off as being offensive as it is discriminating people with a certain  hair colour.

Feedback from client

My teammate and I presented our pitch to the head of year 12 of Acland Burghley which is one of the Laswap schools. We pitched our idea to him about the corporate video we will be creating for the schools sixth form. In the pitch we presented the different ideas we had to offer to the client, by pitching the presentation to one of the heads of Laswap sixth form, it will benefit us by gaining feedback from the client about our ideas as well as include any suggestions or ideas the client is offering to us to create a better and unique corporate video.
Gathering our feedback from our client, he really felt that we had some strong ideas for the corporate video, one of the ideas he really liked was the idea of following four students around the different Laswap locations which is all four schools. Listening to this idea he felt like it would be a great way to represent Laswap as a whole Sixth form rather than filming in one of the locations of Laswap. By also having this idea of students commuting to different schools then coming together at the end of the video shows how linked all four schools are. By showing this in our corporate video, this will allow upcoming students to consider the sixth form as they will capture the essence of Laswap and how it all links together as well as a brief introduction on the sixth form.
Another idea we presented to the client is having different students from Laswap use one word which associates with Laswap and what they think of the sixth form. We took inspiration from the 'University of Manchester' corporate video which consist of students finding a word that affiliates with the university, watching the clip of the Manchester corporate video our client suggested finding previous successful Laswap students who can be included in the video, by having interviews with the ex students this can show up coming students the different paths that can be lead to because of the sixth form.
As we needed a few questions answered for the corporate video, we asked the client a range of questions:

How long would you like the corporate video to be?
Keep the to 3-5 mins maximum as the video could then be sent to schools/ year 11 assemblies for potential students

Do you want us to film as a whole group or individual corporate videos and you can choose the one you prefer best?
If there was more than one video filmed we would then be able to see the different ways the groups  have presented the school and how they view it, giving laswap a wider range to chose from. Once all the videos are completed the videos could also be combined and broth together to create strong video including everything thats needed.

Would you like to include different interviews in the video? if so who?
Think about what attracts people to laswap academically and socially and tie the two together, focus on the mature way students are treated for this you would want to be targeting students and asking about their experience in the school and how they have been able to also build a huge amount of contacts and new friends throughout the your schools, and the also go on to interviewing the teachers and staff about how the schools are exceling and there is a great focus on helping students get to higher education.

What background music would suit the corporate video? e.g slow, current etc..
would have to see it together with the video, once the video is created we could sample two different songs to the client and they can then chose the one they feel is best fitting.

Would you like us to focus on higher education?
Laswap has a higher education office that works full time with students, which they can go to to discuss their future prospects and any issues they may have, this is a selling point for the school as this is not the same in most other colleges, it shows that Laswap is willing to cater to students and pay a great deal of attention to what they will be doing once they have completed their college years.

Would you like us to film particular subjects, if so which ones?
A strong point of Laswap is the huge range of subjects available, although there won't be enough time to include all subjects in a 3 min video, you could focus on a few key successful subjects in the video and then maybe have a list presented in the video of the other subjects that are available.

He also found that students find it hard to imagine how they will be able to socialise and meet new people when they are constantly moving from one school to another and they find this quite intimidating and may be a reason for some not to attend laswap, i feel through this idea of schooling how they school works we will be able to present to the viewer just how the school works.
