The Cutting Edge Documentary

The founding fathers of cinema
One of the founding fathers of cinema i researched were the Lumiere brothers. The Lumiere brothers Auguste and Louis were both filmmakers in France, they both were the earliest filmmakers in history. Louis Lumiere is known for inventing the first motion picture along with several others within the year 1895. The invention the Lumiere's made was a portable motion picture camera which was called cinematographe.

The importance of Edwin Stanton Porter
Edwin Stanton Porter was a important man in the film industry, the reason for this is he was known for discovering cuts between shots. This discovery was one of many effective discoverer created in the moving pictures industry, the reason for this is Edwin Porter believed that cutting between shots could create a story rather than something being filmed with no meaning. Porter did this by inter cutting to shots that are not related to each other, this could an emotional impact for the audience by cutting different shots together to create a more understanding for the audience as they are watching on what is happening in the film.
Porter shows this technique very well in the film he created 'Life of an American' where there is a fire and people need saving.

Here is the link for the Porters film. The cut between the two different shots is from 0.45 seconds of the film to 3.15 seconds which show the house on fire. This shows the audience how the firemen are rushing over to the burning house trying to save the people. By this Porter is trying to create a sense of tension for the viewers as you see the actors in the movie panicking and crying for help but then cuts to the firemen going to save the people, which then creates a sense of relief towards the end of the film. This is how Porter would make his films more as a story rather than a moving image being projected. In addition Porter also created dissolves between different shots and transaction between one another, this was created further into Porters Editing career.

 Some of Edwin Porter films
The great train robbery(1903)
Life of an American fireman(1903)
Jack and the beanstalk(1902)
Tess of the storm country(1914)
The thieving hand(1908)

The purpose of editing
The purpose of editing is to determined the pace and the mood of different movie genres to give more of an clear understanding on what the movie is about. Editing can have different types of techniques for example different types of speeds to create tension, different video translations to make the movie more smooth and clear etc. without editing a movie would be very meaningful and harder to understand for the viewer whereas a movie with editing makes it very clear, has more of a meaning on why certain shots are taken also makes it easier to understand the whole point of a movie.

The first modern editor
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D._W._Griffith
The first modern editor was D.W. Griffith (January 22, 1875 - July 23, 1948)

The names of D.W. Griffith films
The birth of a nation(1915)
Way down east(1920)
Broken blossom(1919)
The New York hat(1912)
Hearts of the world(1918)

What he did that was special or different
What D.W. Griffith did that was special and different from different film directors is Griffith was the first to use the close up, parrallel action and flashbacks. By having these different cuts and edits, Griffith was trying to convey to the audience the body language or the facial expressions of the character. This has had a huge impact on how people see characters in films today. You get more of an understanding on how the character is feeling as well as make the audience feel the same way.

The concept of the invisble cut
The concept of an invisible cut is a movement made of a performer which is then cut, this is achieved by overlapping the action by using two cameras which is then matching the action whilst editing the movie.

Assemble edit for 'The Crash'

In order to create this video, I edited 6 different clips together to create a piece of short footage. To create the footage i used premiere project which enabled me to edit the different types of clips together using different effects, one of the main effects I included into the scene was an audio from one clip which i overlapped onto the short scene to create suspense  in the sequence.

One thing i need to improve in the short footage is the clip of the actual car hitting the ground, this will give the viewer a clear idea of the storyline as well as make it clearer and understanding how one shot got to the other.

Here is the new and improved version of the scene. I have slightly changed the ending of the footage to make it look more realistic and clear.

sequence of the beach

In this short movie i have created a movie with different types of editing techniques such as continuity editing and 'match on action' editing. By using these types of editing techniques, they create different effects for the viewer for example some fast paste editing can create a little tension within the sequence. Using continuity editing within the short movie makes the sequence flow well together and look sharp as well as it makes it clearer for the audience to understand. This also implies with the technique matching on action as it helps the short movie flow also helps fit all shots together to create the sequence.

Intro

My name is Meltem Ustun and i am a sixth form student at Laswap, the reason i have chose BTEC Media level 3 is because i completed 2 years of media in year 11 and really enjoyed the subject which lead me on to choosing it for sixth form. The 2 years of  media in year 11 where very basic, as i found media interesting within those 2 years i wanted to carry it on and see what it has to offer me.
